Adventurous Activities
Want to run an activity?
Take a look at Scouts NSW - Adventurous Activities – everything you need to know is documented here. It’s a lot to digest! A great starting point is "What activities can I run?" (under “Plan an Activity | Work out what activities you can lead”). This tells you what qualifications are required to run a particular activity.
You will also need to complete a Risk Assessment for your activity. This important step demonstrates that you've considered the associated risks and have plans in place to mitigate them.
Note: The Event organiser and the person with the qualifications required to run the activity (the Adventurous Activity Leader) are not necessarily the same person. Once you’ve assembled all the required paperwork, your activity must be submitted via the Activity Notification and Approval System (ANS)
Want to get qualified?
Take a look at Scouts NSW - Adventurous Activity - Get Qualified
Note: Various links in this area require you to be logged into your Scouts NSW Office 365 account.
If you have existing experience you may be able to achieve qualifications by completing the relevant Prior Achievement Recognition (PAR) document. Otherwise, you’ll need to complete the Workbook.
Note that “TP Core” is required in order to gain “Trained Participant” in any activity. “TP Core” can be approved by any other Wood Badge leader who holds “TP Core”. All other qualifications require approval by a Scouts NSW Guide. Current Guides in our Region are:
phil.shepherd@nsw.scouts.com.au – Canoe/Kayak Paddling (including white-water) + Bushwalking
It’s always worth progressing on the e-Learning modules. These can be accessed at Scouts Australia - Adult Training and Development - navigate to Curriculums / Adventurous Activities.
IMPORTANT: Start logging your adventures. All qualifications require evidence of recent experience. A good template is this Adventurous Activities Log Book
Looking for formal courses?
Often Scouts NSW run formal adventurous activity training and/or workshop events. Events in our Region can be found at NCR ScoutEvent, but it’s also worth browsing other Regions via NSW ScoutEvent and Scouts NSW - Find An Adventure. If you travel long distance to attend training, fill out the Benjamin Thompson Claim Form and return to Region Office to see if you are eligible for a rebate of your travel expenses.
